Big Up is Back!
Wednesday, 28 July 2010 00:00

The two-time Golden Horn Award-winning TV show “BIG UP” comes back on air for a 3rd season!

“BIGUP!”- your favourite morality,  youth and lifestyle magazine show with a musical twist is back on SABC 1, at 12 midday on the 18th July 2010, for its third season.

In a unique “BIG UP!” way, this new season is geared to take viewers deep into the hearts of young South Africans who have dedicated their time and disposable income to serve their communities and share their spiritual enlightenment with others. We call these young community builders “our local heroes”.   They are our heroes because their selfless work ranges from being big ‘brothers’ and big ‘sisters’ to orphaned children; to bathing ailing neighbours and cleaning their homes on a regular basis. What’s more it’s all for no pay and no recognition.

But, as fans of the two previous seasons know, BIG UP is not the usual run-off-the-mill documentary programme about a bunch of young do-gooders, it is a unique concept that captures the good work young local heroes are doing through the beat of music.

How you might ask? Well, imagine a high-end music video of a popular singer featuring a young community builder as the leading “star”.  That’s what BIG UP is all about; capturing the work young community builders do, music video style! You get to see these good Samaritans celebrated by being featured in the latest and hippest music videos of their favourite musical icons.

In a nutshell, each episode features the making of a funky music video by a popular artist and incorporates various imagery to illustrate the rich lives of these young, spiritually empowered South Africans who are making a difference in their communities.

The culmination of each episode is the playing of the actual music video.

The first 21 minutes preceding the screening of the music video comprises the behind-the-scenes process revealing the making of the music video.

BIG UP seasons 1 and 2 facilitated many young community builders’ starring debuts in the sizzling music of stars such as Ishmael, Ntando, Bongi Dube, Lebo ‘Elle’ Tisane, Nhlanhla Nciza, Mandoza, Thembi Seete, Ntsiki Mazwai, Jub Jub, Deborah Frazer, Theo Kgosinkwe, HHP and many more.  These music videos were visual showcases of the good work the featured local heroes do for their communities.  We have all seen these music videos on popular TV shows as “Live”, “It’s Gospel Time”, “Gospel Gold”, “Music lounge” and many others.

Season three promises more of these ground breaking music videos, which will not only   entertain music lovers but also inspire fans by featuring selfless young South Africans as the stars of the music videos, as a way to say “BIG UP” to them.

There are  26 half-hour episodes coming up in season  3 and, as in the first 2 seasons, the host of the show is none other than popular super star and actor Tshepo ’Howza’ Mosese.

The show was created by TV Producer and CEO of the TOXMEDIA group, Thokozani Nkosi, who says:

“The Phrase ‘BIG UP” is a street slang reference to the words “well done, we salute you”.  there are few as deserving of this accolade as the local heroes we are featuring in season 3.  These youngsters will leave you amazed at how dedicated they are to their spirituality and their dedication to building their communities, even in their youth.

Get ready to meet a young man who has hardly come of age but, in spite of his poor background, has knocked on big corporate doors and has already secured study bursaries, not only for himself but for his underprivileged peers in his neighbourhood as well.   Tune in to also get inspired by a young woman who dedicates almost all her free time to empowering girl-children to become future leaders in society through various leadership training programmes.

Put your dancing boots on because your won’t be experiencing these amazing stories without wanting to boogie too, because the work of these local heroes will be contained within the music video of a hit song dedicated to the featured community builder by the star who sings the song”.

“BIG UP” season 3 will be directed by Thabo Pitso, whom, at only age 27, has vast experience in the television media industry. He has worked as Producer and Director for successful television shows such as “Agape”, “Winikaya”, “Curious Culture”,“The Chatroom” and many more.

The show is also produced by a young team (all in their 20s)and its appeal to SABC 1 viewers shows that the producers of the show have their hand on the pulse of Mzansi’s youthful Spirit.

It is not only our many viewers who are totally crazy about the show, the TV production industry has also taken its hat off to “BIG UP”, not once but twice at the South African Television and Film Awards; when both in 2009 and 2010 ‘BIG UP” scooped an award for the Best Youth television show and Talk Show categories respectively.

BIG UP premiers on SABC 1 on 18th July 2010 at 12 midday!!!

Tune in and experience a revolution.
